Unforgettable Dolphin sea adventures and whale spotting. For the adventurous, curious and sea enthusiast this is a must. Launching from our mermaid beach and venturing into the world of exciting sea animals.
During the winter months (June to September) there is a chance of close-up encounters with the migrating humpback whales. Hump Back Whales has a distinctive body shape, with unusually long pectoral fins and a knobbly head and a very distinctive tail. The tail flukes, which are lifted high in some dive sequences, have wavy trailing edges. It is an acrobatic animal, often breaching and slapping the water. Humpbacks feed only in summer, in polar waters, and migrate to our tropical or sub-tropical waters to breed and give birth in the winter.
You could come across Manta rays play in the waves. These very curious looking animals are filter feeders: they feed on plankton and fish larvae and the like, passively filtered from the water passing through their gills as they swim. Mantas are extremely curious around humans, and are fond of swimming with scuba divers and snorkelers. They are an absolute joy to watch.
The observation of our beautiful and gracious Whale Sharks. This distinctively-marked shark is the only member of its genus Rhincodon and its family. This slow moving filter feeding shark that is the largest living fish species. It can grow up to 12.2 m (40 ft) in length and can weigh up to 13.6 tonnes (15 short tons). The Whale Shark is found in our tropical and warm oceans and lives in the open seas; it can live for about 70 years. Although whale sharks have very large mouths, they mainly feed on plankton, microscopic plants and animals. They are a real treat to observe in their magnitude.
Many have experienced the thrill of swimming with the dolphins while they dart around you. Dolphins are considered to be amongst the most intelligent of animals and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture. In Mozambique we get The Common Bottlenose Dolphin that lives in groups called pods that typically number about 15 dolphins but group size varies from solitary bottlenose dolphins up to groups of over 30 sometimes. Other species of Dolphins have also been identified in the region. The Indo-Pacific Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) is a species of Bottlenose Dolphin, the Spinner Dolphin (Stenella longirostris) is a small dolphin found in off-shore tropical waters around the world. It is famous for its acrobatic displays in which they will spin longitudinally along their axis as they leap through the air last but not least the Pantropical Spotted Dolphin (Stenella attenuata) is a species of dolphin found in all the world's temperate and tropical oceans.
